What makes wooden cups special?
The key distinguishing feature of wooden cups is "their soul": all the wooden cups that reach us from South America are handmade, so each one differs slightly in appearance and size. South American craftsmen are experts in their field and put their heart into their work every day, so that beautiful and durable wooden cups, most often with a metal fitting, leave their workshops.
For example, a wooden Palo Santo cup contains an aromatic resin that is released while the infusion is brewing. The infusion is then enriched with a slightly citrusy note that is quite noticeable and gives mate drunk from such a cup additional flavour. Remember not to dry these cups too quickly (next to a fireplace or on a radiator), as this can crack the wood, and we would not want that.
Wooden or ceramic cup?
This is a choice often faced by people starting their adventure with Paraguayan holly, also called Paraguayan tea or simply yerba mate. Wooden cups have that extra something that ceramic cups lack. Mate drunk from a Palo Santo cup is enhanced by the aromatic resin released from the wood. You will not get this effect with a ceramic cup. Nevertheless, ceramic cups win on simplicity and ease of use. We leave the choice to you.
