What is a Yerba Mate gourd like?
If you are interested in buying a gourd cup, you need to know what a gourd actually is and what its features are. It is made from the natural, hardened (lignified) fruit called Lagenaria siceraria, known in English as the bottle gourd. Compared with, for example, a ceramic cup, this type of cup must be looked after with due care. The most important thing is to take care of it after every use. This means that the leftover leaves should be thrown out within 24 h and not left for longer. A Yerba Mate gourd is prone to mould if it is poorly cared for and maintained. Moisture inside the cup should be avoided. If this aspect of care is neglected, bacteria multiply and mould forms. Slow, natural drying also plays an important role. Do not leave the cup on a radiator, heater or fireplace - otherwise the matero will crack quickly.

What does a gourd cup look like?
A gourd matero looks like a typical gourd fruit: wide at the bottom and narrowing towards the top, and there is a good reason for this shape, as it lets you get the desired essence when pouring water. With use, the inside of the gourd changes colour, and its walls may take on the aroma of a given tea as they become saturated with it. In most cases the product has a special virola at the top, i.e. a metal rim that protects the cup from chipping and protects your lips from irritation by an uneven edge. In appearance, the gourd looks almost exactly like the gourd fruit.

Anyone who wants to feel the true magic of Yerba Mate should definitely consider a gourd cup. A well-stocked shop like ours can offer a wide variety of products here too, including Calabaza or Porongo type gourds and leather-covered gourds.
