For many yerba mate lovers it is nothing but Paraguayan holly, with no unnecessary additions. However, not everyone likes the often strong bitterness, which can be toned down with herbal additions. The most popular are: mint, poleo, cedron, rockrose, burrito and peppermint. Almost every producer offers blends containing at least one of the herbs listed above. Added herbs give the yerba mate infusion extra flavour and also change its aroma. It is an ideal choice for Paraguayan holly lovers who are looking for new flavours and want to break the monotony of their favourite mate with something new from time to time. In a word, yerba mate and herbs are an extremely interesting combination.
One of the most popular herbal mates in our range is Pajarito Hierbas, a blend of Paraguayan holly with burrito, peppermint and poleo in a 9:1 ratio. This Paraguayan blend also tastes excellent with chilled citrus juice, e.g. orange juice. This way of preparing mate is known as Mate russo, a method invented by Russian immigrants who came to South America at the beginning of the 20th century. Their tweak - replacing water with fruit juice - was well received and remains popular to this day.
