Years of tradition and experience: the most popular Argentine yerba mate brands

When yerba mate first appeared on the Polish market, the number of available Argentine brands was quite limited. Today, we have far more options and access to small plantations that produce truly unique, inimitable yerba mate varieties.

Nevertheless, for many, Argentine yerba mate is inseparable from its most famous and highly regarded brands. These include: Amanda (associated with Jan Szychowski); CBSé (known for its wide range of flavors and long-standing presence in Poland); Taragüi (the flagship brand of Las Marias); Rosamonte (recognizable by the rose on its packaging); Playadito (also one of the most popular brands in Argentina); Cruz de Malta (featuring the Maltese Cross in its logo); and Piporé (a respected classic available in various forms, though recently harder to find).

Of course, the list is much longer, ensuring that everyone can find something to their liking—and should you have trouble choosing, you can always turn to us for advice.

What do the terms often found on Argentine yerba mate packaging actually mean?

Packaging for Argentine yerba mate often bears labels that might not mean much at first glance. It is worth knowing exactly what they signify before making a purchase. *Elaborada con palo* means the processed yerba mate contains stems; *despalada* indicates a blend with at least 85–90% leaf content; *sin humo* means it was dried without smoke; *suave* denotes a mild flavor or effect; *saborizada* means flavored; *con hierbas* indicates added herbs; *selección especial* refers to a special leaf selection (and sometimes an extended aging period); *sin palo* means stem-free; and *estacionamiento natural* refers to natural aging, which adds interesting nuances and flavor notes to the yerba.

Misiones Province, Argentina: A wealth of small, niche plantations

For quite some time, we have been striving to expand our shop’s selection with unique offerings from small, often family-run plantations. Many of these brands focus primarily on the domestic market and do not even consider exporting their products beyond Argentina.

However, through our direct import operations, we are constantly expanding our yerba portfolio with new brands that win over your taste buds and encourage you to try something new. Some of these become long-term favorites or even permanent fixtures in our product lineup.

It is worth highlighting a few of these brands that captivated us from the moment we opened the package, prepared the first serving, and took that first sip. Notable examples of Argentine yerba maté from niche plantations include Origen Barbacua, Zapeca, Caballo Negro Barbacua, Yemari, Dulce Beso, Picada Vieja, Ajedrez, and Secadero.

Of course, the list is much longer, as Argentina has so much to offer—something many people do not fully realize.

FAQ Corner: Frequently asked questions about Argentine yerba mate:

1. Is Argentine yerba mate a good choice for starting one's journey with *Ilex paraguariensis*?

Absolutely! Argentine yerba mates are among our top recommendations for those beginning their adventure with the "green gold" of South America. There are several reasons for this: a relatively coarse cut with a moderate amount of dust, a comparatively light and mild flavor, and a wide range of available varieties—from traditional blends to flavored options (fruit or herbal). All of this makes it more likely that you will enjoy Argentine yerba mate right from the start and develop a lasting appreciation for the herb, turning it into a daily beverage that successfully replaces other caffeinated drinks.

2. How does Argentine yerba mate differ from Paraguayan yerba mate?

When comparing popular brands from Argentina and Paraguay, several differences become apparent. First of all, the cut of Paraguayan yerba is finer—featuring smaller leaf fragments and more dust—which might not necessarily appeal to those just starting out with yerba mate.

Argentine yerba mates also tend to have a more pleasant flavor profile, especially for those taking their first steps into the world of yerba. The infusion is typically nutty and cereal-like, with woody and slightly creamy notes, accompanied by a pleasant bitterness and astringency. In contrast, Paraguayan yerba mates usually feature more pronounced smoky, bitter, and astringent notes, which may not always be the best choice for a beginner.

3. Do all Argentine yerba mates taste the same?

Of course not. The provinces of Misiones and Corrientes are home to a vast array of brands and plantations, offering a diversity of flavors shaped by cultivation techniques, drying methods, and the aging period of the *Ilex paraguariensis* leaves.

Argentine yerba offers a wide spectrum of flavors: from lighter varieties labeled *suave* (mild) or BCP—*bajo contenido de polvo* (low dust content)—which are notably less bitter and astringent, to bold, robust profiles achieved through the traditional *Barbacua* drying method, which imparts a distinctive smoky taste and aroma.

It is worth emphasizing that Argentina, as a major producer, has an immense amount to offer in the world of yerba mate. It is no coincidence that this is the largest category in our store.
