Yerba Mate Sara Ivory PU-1 Curcuma y Pimienta 500 g
One of two new products from the Sara brand, straight from Brazil and made for the Uruguayan market (export). Not everyone may know this, but Uruguay mostly outsources production to Brazil, where mate for the Uruguayan market is prepared. In this case the pack contains not only Paraguayan holly but also two spices: turmeric and pepper, which give the infusion a gentle heat. In general, Tipo PU1 varieties, i.e. Uruguayan-type mate, are fairly demanding, but they reward you with a bold and long-lasting flavour.
The herbs complement the Paraguayan holly, not the other way round
Uruguayan varieties, i.e. those produced in Brazil for the Uruguayan market, offer an interesting combination of flavours, especially in the herbal versions. They combine features typical of Argentinian mate and of mate from Brazil. The spices play a supporting role, but they stay in the background and do not overpower the classic yerba flavour. We get a slight heat from the pepper and a delicately oriental note from the turmeric.
Sara Curcuma y Pimienta combines yerba intensity and creaminess with a spicy kick. The blend consists mainly of finely ground leaves, a lot of dust, a minimal amount of stems (about 1%) and added spices. Because of this, it is a fairly demanding mate that needs a so-called slope (a mound of leaves in the gourd). Otherwise, you may have trouble enjoying the flavour of this variety. The intensity and bitterness are pleasantly complemented by the herbs, resulting in an interesting balance.
Due to how finely the leaves are ground and the large amount of dust, we do not recommend this mate to those just taking their first steps in the rich world of yerba mate. We recommend it to more experienced drinkers and those looking for new taste experiences. They certainly will not be disappointed with Sara mate.
