Yerba Mate Mate Rojo "10" Compuesta con hierbas (with herbs) 250 g
We are expanding our range of Yerba Mate "10". The next addition is a distinctly herbal blend with added herbs (peppermint and corn mint). The brand comes from the town of Oberá in the province of Misiones, Argentina. It is produced by Mate Rojo (Molinos La Misión SA), a company founded by the son of Ukrainian immigrants, Don Juan Eladio Stepaniuk. Their portfolio includes brands such as Mate Rojo, Rodeo, "10", Il Capitano, Chamame and Kurupi.
The packaging stands out with blue and light green vertical stripes and the number "10" in the centre of the pack. It is worth mentioning that the bag is a doypack with a zip closure, so it is easy to open and reseal, preventing the blend from losing its aroma and flavour. The blend contains only Paraguayan holly and two kinds of mint, with no artificial additives or flavourings.
Inside the "10" Compuesta con hierbas pack you will find medium and finer cut leaves with some medium-sized stems and a moderate amount of dust. On opening, you are hit by a fairly strong minty, almost menthol aroma, with tea-like, grassy, herbal and woody notes in the background.
From the very start the infusion is intensely minty, slightly herbal, tea-like, gently grassy, woody, grainy-nutty and creamy. The mint is clearly noticeable but does not completely overpower the taste of the yerba, which will surely appeal to fans of blends in which the yerba still has an important role to play. The bitterness and astringency are light to moderate, but noticeable.
The producer also states that the blend does not cause heartburn, with the label "zero acidez".
The first infusions are relatively light and mild, but over time the brew gains intensity and delivers a real flavour experience. In terms of energy it is still solid, especially with two kinds of mint in the blend. The infusion holds up well to repeated refills and guarantees many hours of mate drinking. Thanks to the added mint it is perfect for cold preparation (terere), but nothing stops you from drinking it the traditional way (hot) as well.
