Opis produktu
Gourd (cuia) decorated "Martelada" 190-220 ml
An interestingly decorated cup intended primarily for the finely ground Brazilian mate called chimarrao. The cuia is made from a gourd, but its shape differs from the classic Argentinian calabaza, as it comes from a different part of the plant, closer to the stem - hence its distinctive hourglass shape. Thanks to its size, it is an ideal choice for those who want to fully enjoy the charms and long-lasting nature of chimarrao throughout the day.
Brazilians have loved Chimarrao since time immemorial, and these cups were used even before the European conquistadors arrived in South America. They remain very popular today, and many Brazilians cannot imagine life without their cuia and their favourite finely ground mate, chimarrao.
The "Martelada" gourd (cuia) is a medium-sized natural cup made from a gourd fruit, with a metal base glued on that keeps the matero stable. It holds about 190 ml, just right for a generous serving of chimarrao for a good few hours. There are also versions in which the cuia consists of two parts: the cup and a stand. This one is a single-piece version. Made to order for the Brazilian brand Garibaldi.
The cup features colourful decorations all around, which are hand-carved and then dyed. It has a burnt rim, which makes everyday use (drying) of this part of the cup easier.
Before first use, we recommend pouring boiling water into it and leaving it for 1-2 h, or - the more recommended option - preparing an aromatic mixture: mate + any herbs (mint, lemongrass, etc.) poured into the cup and covered with boiling water, then left in the cup for 1-2 h as before. After that, empty the cup, rinse out the mate residue thoroughly, wipe the inside with a paper towel and leave it to dry for 1 day.
Important note on use: after each day of use, the cuia needs time to dry - ideally 24 hours to get rid of all moisture. If you forget about this, mould can appear in the cup quite quickly and it will no longer be usable. Dry the cup in its normal position - do not turn it upside down and do not put it away in places without air circulation (e.g. cupboards).
There may be slight discolouration inside the cup and scratches on the outside.
Only 2 pieces of this model are available, so do not wait too long. The photo shows the 190 ml model; individual pieces differ in shape, capacity, shade and pattern.
