Decorated gourd (cuia) "Petalos" 230 ml
An exceptional vessel with interesting decorations, intended mainly for Brazilian finely ground mate called chimarrao. The cuia is made from a gourd, but its shape differs from the classic Argentinian calabaza because it comes from a different part of the plant, closer to the stem - hence its distinctive hourglass-like shape. Thanks to its size, it is an ideal choice for anyone who wants to make full use of the charm and yield of chimarrao throughout the day.
Brazilians have loved chimarrao for ages, and these vessels were already in use before the European conquistadors arrived in South America. They are still very popular today, and many Brazilians cannot imagine life without their own gourd and their favourite finely ground mate, chimarrao.
Gourd (cuia) "Petalos" is a large (approx. 230 ml) natural vessel made from a gourd fruit with a glued-on metal foot that keeps the cuia stable. Some versions of the cuia consist of two parts: the vessel and a stand. This one is a one-piece version. Made by the Brazilian brand Arte Couro (Taura).
It features a beautiful floral decoration - flower petals of various sizes, to be precise - resulting in an unusual engraving visible all around the gourd. The entire motif has been laser-burnt. Its rim has been burnt, which makes everyday use (drying) of this part of the gourd easier.
Before first use, we recommend pouring boiling water into the gourd and leaving it for 1-2 h or - the more recommended option - preparing an aromatic mixture: mate + any herbs (mint, lemongrass, etc.), which you put into the gourd, cover with boiling water and, as before, leave in the gourd for 1-2 h. After this time, empty the gourd, rinse out the remaining mate thoroughly, then wipe the inside with a paper towel and leave it to dry for 1 day.
An important note on use: after each day of use, the cuia needs time to dry - ideally 24 hours, so that all the moisture is gone. If you forget about this, mould can appear in the gourd quite quickly and it will no longer be fit for use. Dry the gourd standing upright - do not turn it upside down and do not keep it in places without air circulation (e.g. in cupboards).
Only one piece of this gourd is available. It may have slight discolouration inside and scratches on the outside.
