A superb Argentinian yerba we know well, in a distinctive pink package featuring - as the name suggests - a natural gourd vessel, the porongo. It also carries a quote saying that "good yerba never dies", in Spanish "yerba buena nunca muere". We can only agree, especially since our experience with this yerba goes back to at least 2021. For several years we worked to be able to share this yerba with you, and we are extremely pleased that it has finally happened.
Ladies and gentlemen, here is Porongo Tradicional, a yerba that guarantees a rich and complex infusion that will keep you going for many hours. It is an organic mate from the province of Misiones without additives, containing both larger and medium-sized leaves and stems of Paraguayan holly, along with a moderate amount of dust. The leaves look quite unusual and draw your attention.
The aroma after opening the pack is fairly intense and pronounced; to us it is somewhat reminiscent of a forest and a meadow, along with the notes typical of Argentinian yerbas: hay, grain, nuts and wood.
The first sip of the infusion immediately hits you with robust flavours. There is a smoky taste, a light astringency and a drying sensation on the tongue, which becomes more and more noticeable over time. The bitterness is fairly light at first, but with subsequent infusions it gains intensity and assertiveness.
You will also notice a pleasant sweetness (creaminess) typical of Uruguayan-style mate or mate from Brazil. Add to this herbaceous and grassy notes and a hint of walnut (sunflower). There is undoubtedly a lot going on in this infusion, which guarantees a very rewarding acquaintance with this yerba.
Porongo Tradicional also means a high yield and a strong energising effect. If you are looking for an extraordinary yerba full of interesting flavours, you definitely have to try it.
