Yerba mate Picada Vieja Barbacua 500 g
A smoky, bitter and extremely intense yerba from the borderland of Argentinian and Paraguayan flavours. We tested it back in 2020 and finally, thanks to our efforts, we managed to bring it to Poland. A rarity from the province of Misiones!
The processing method, the so-called Barbacua, gives the yerba a characteristic smoked, smoky taste that is not typical of all Argentinian yerbas. Nevertheless, lovers of extremely rich and intense infusions will be in seventh heaven.
Picada Vieja comes in a stylish retro paper pack, which makes it look extremely charming. The texture of the paper is quite rough, which undoubtedly adds to the experience of this yerba - something you will not find in smooth packs lacking that slightly rough structure. But that is a detail; let us focus on the other features of the contents of the pack.
The leaves are medium-sized, there are of course some stems and quite a lot of dust, but it is no trouble to prepare. When you open the pack, you are hit by the intensity of the aromas: the scent of a campfire, smoky notes and smokiness - something wonderful! Some might think it is a Paraguayan yerba, but nothing could be further from the truth.
From the very first sips, the infusion is a festival of flavours and intensity coming from the cup. Bitterness and astringency compete for first place, while smokiness and smoked notes have just as much "to say". In the background you will sense notes of walnut, wood and smoked plum. Its flavour profile definitely leans more towards Paraguay - but is that a bad thing? Absolutely not!
Picada Vieja Barbacua delivers an above-average energy boost, guaranteeing power for many hours of activity. The leaf itself is extremely long-lasting and guarantees top-level mate drinking. It comes from a small plantation that uses natural methods of cultivation, leaf processing and natural ageing. The result is one of the best Argentinian Barbacua-style yerbas!
