One of the best Barbacua yerba mates I have ever had the chance to try! My first encounter with Origen was in 2020 and it was an extremely successful mate session. The intensity of the infusion from the matero (mate gourd) made itself felt almost immediately, and as a result I had the chance to sip it several more times, bringing it in directly from Argentina.
Fortunately, we have finally managed to bring it to Poland in larger quantities! Thanks to our efforts, we can present to you an exceptional yerba mate whose aroma and taste will satisfy every yerba connoisseur and fan of the Barbacua style. Flavours from the borderland of Argentina and Paraguay are definitely a yerba "must try".
The Origen brand focuses on natural (artisanal) cultivation methods, traditional Barbacua drying, leaf selection and an extended natural ageing process (over 18 months), during which the leaf matures and acquires interesting background notes. Interestingly, the drying process alone takes more than 24 hours for a given batch: the leaves are exposed to heat from a furnace, which gradually dries the Paraguayan holly and gives it its characteristic aroma and taste.
When you open the pack, you see a fairly coarsely cut leaf, although the pack contains both coarsely cut leaves and more finely ground ones. Add to that some stems and a moderate amount of dust - easy to prepare regardless of your yerba experience.
Another extremely important attribute of this yerba is its wonderful aroma! Intense, bold and very distinctive, with a strongly noticeable smoked scent, which personally reminds me of smoked oscypek cheese with herbs. There are also smoky and cereal notes, but smokiness reigns supreme here.
Origen Barbacua guarantees a rich infusion full of bitterness and astringency, with a puckering aftertaste on the tongue and a noticeable light acidity. The most characteristic feature of the infusion is its smoked aftertaste; just like the aroma, the taste resembles smoked cheese, while others may associate it with bacon. There is no fishy aftertaste as in, for example, Caballo Negro Barbacua.
In the background there are cereal, woody and nutty notes; the bouquet of flavours hits the palate and invites you to take more sips. An inseparable element of Origen is its high saltiness, which I have not found so far in any other yerba mate. Sweetness, on the other hand, is almost imperceptible. It is a distinctive and intense yerba that does not do things by halves but offers real taste experiences. For us it is absolutely top-tier yerba, possibly the best Argentinian Barbacua.
In terms of energy it is also an above-average option - a few quick sips and you will feel its effect almost immediately. The leaf is long-lasting and guarantees a whole day of top-level mate drinking.
It is definitely worth trying at least once!
