New in our range, with a distinctive black horse on the packaging - one of two versions available from this Argentinian brand.
In a retro-style paper pack with a slightly rough texture, you will find an outstanding yerba from Apostoles in the province of Misiones. It owes its unique aroma and flavour to traditional cultivation and to drying the leaves using the Barbacua method, which gives it a characteristic smoky taste.
When opened, Caballo Negro Barbacua surprises with an aroma that personally reminds me of smoked fish, specifically mackerel. There is also a hay-like note and a scent of campfire. It is not overly intense, but very distinctive, which will appeal to lovers of the Secado Barbacua style.
The leaves are quite green for an Argentinian yerba; the pack mainly contains coarser-cut leaves, with some finer ones and a minimal amount of dust.
From the very first pour, the infusion has a characteristic smokiness that will delight your taste buds. It can be compared to the Brazilian offering from Meta Mate, specifically Leafy Melody. Here, the bitterness and astringency are fairly intense and pronounced, with a pleasantly astringent aftertaste on the tongue that lingers for a long time, plus other interesting notes in the background. For me, these are grainy and nutty notes, a light grassiness, a subtle smokiness and a hint of sweetness.
A rich composition of flavours that will surprise many a fan of the Barbacua style. It is solid in terms of energy - you feel its effect straight away - and the leaves are economical, guaranteeing many hours of mate drinking with a fantastic Argentinian yerba mate from the province of Misiones. It may not be meant for everyday drinking, but once or twice a week it will be a perfect way to vary your yerba menu.
