Yerba mate don Omar Tradicional BCP 250 g
A classic option from Yerbatera Hoja Verde in a smaller pack, perfect for trying it out. A yerba from the Misiones province with a distinctive image in its logo - presumably don Omar himself, holding a kettle of water in one hand and a gourd with a bombilla stuck into the yerba in the other. The design of the pack certainly catches the eye from the outside, but is it just as good inside?
Definitely! Don Omar Tradicional is a BCP version, i.e. Bajo Contenido de polvo, meaning reduced dust content. The result is fairly coarsely cut leaves with some stems and a minimal amount of dust. The pack is tightly sealed, which guarantees an intense aroma of the leaves and a wealth of flavours.
The yerba smells quite intense, with hay-like, cereal and nutty notes in the foreground; some may also associate it with roasted sunflower seeds, and a delicate hint of smoke can be detected.
Building the mound is remarkably easy - a real pleasure! From the first pour the infusion is intense and bold: a pleasant bitterness interwoven with astringency, with noticeable cereal and nutty notes and gentle smokiness, makes for an exceptionally successful combination. Of course, that is not all you will find in this yerba - there is also an astringent aftertaste on the tongue, a taste of roasted sunflower seeds and delicate woody notes.
The infusion stays intense for a long time, providing a solid but not excessive dose of energy. In this respect, another option from the same company, Salam, performs much better. Don Omar Tradicional, on the other hand, guarantees a rich bouquet and many hours of mate drinking with an excellent yerba mate from a niche plantation.
All thanks to small-scale production and a natural ageing process, during which the leaves acquire interesting flavour notes. If you are a fan of such traditional options from Argentina, you definitely have to try it.
