Yerba Mate Canarias Serena 500 g
A herbal take on the iconic Uruguayan mate, recently also available in a smaller pack (500 g). It is produced in Brazil, but made for the Uruguayan market. This herbal variety contains the best finely ground leaves, very few stems (approx. 1%), a good amount of dust and four added herbs: linden, mint, lemon balm and mburucuya (passionflower).
Because the leaves are finely ground, this type of mate needs to be prepared with a so-called mound. Otherwise, drinking Canarias will be practically impossible and fine particles will keep clogging the bombilla.
The flavour of Canarias Serena combines the best features of Brazilian and Argentinian mates with a noticeable herbal aroma and taste. The flavour itself can be described as milder than the classic version (Elaborada). Creaminess, sweetness and a vegetal taste take centre stage, with noticeable bitterness and moderate acidity. It is all rounded off by a delicate herbal note from the bouquet of added herbs, which stay in the background and cannot dominate the flavour of the mate.
An interesting change from classic Uruguayan Tipo PU-1 mates. Recommended rather for more experienced drinkers because of how finely the leaves are ground and the amount of dust. Still, it is worth trying at any stage of your yerba mate journey, as long as you use the right way of drinking it (the so-called mound).
