Yerba mate Suria Barbacua 500 g
A niche yerba mate from Argentina by the Suria brand, available in very limited quantities. It is dried using the traditional Barbacua method, which gives it character in both aroma and flavour.
Interestingly, the producer states that it is not aged. It contains both leaves and stems of the Paraguayan holly with a moderate amount of dust. The plant is harvested in winter, when Paraguayan holly retains the most nutrients.
Suria Barbacua undoubtedly stands out with a very nicely cut leaf, with large and medium-sized leaves mixed with stems. When you open the bag, you notice a fairly mild scent - slightly woody, grainy-nutty and gently smoky, but not hinting at particularly intense flavours.
Once it is in the gourd and the water is poured, however, it is a completely different story. The infusion has a black tea flavour, considerable astringency, bitterness and earthy (woody) notes. The intensity grows with each refill. The flavour sits relatively low and delivers distinct taste sensations. You will also find a light saltiness, smokiness, smoked notes and plenty of acidity.
Suria is one of the very efficient and extractive yerbas from Argentina, delivering a solid energy boost over many hours of mate drinking. We strongly recommend it to all fans of craft yerbas and of the Barbacua style.
