Yerba mate Selva Tradicional 500 g
Another new brand in our range, from the town of Oberá in the province of Misiones, Argentina. It is produced by Establecimiento Yerbatero ANRA S.R.L., whose portfolio also includes the Irupe and Mateando Te brands.
The person behind the Selva brand is María Gabriela Martínez, a yerba and tea sommelier. This particular brand was created with the help of the Irupe and Aguas Arriba initiative in cooperation with Banco de Bosques, whose aim is to use yerba mate as a driving force for protecting the rainforests of the province of Misiones. Every pack sold protects 1 m² of rainforest.
This version is a traditional yerba with no additives, containing coarsely and medium-cut Paraguayan holly leaves with some stems and a moderate amount of dust.
The producer recommends filling 3/4 of the vessel with leaves, making the first pour with noticeably cooler water, and then using water at around 80°C. Traditionally, of course - with a slope.
When you open the pack, Selva Tradicional smells fairly mild: the leaves smell of hay and are woody, grainy and nutty, gently smoky and tea-like. The intensity of the scent gives no hint of how bold this yerba is or how complex its infusion will be.
The infusion is distinctive from the start, with the characteristic yerba bitterness and astringency balanced by woody, grainy and nutty notes, a light creaminess and a smoky but not excessive taste. With subsequent pours the infusion does not lose its strength or character, and more notes appear: tea-like, grassy, a drying sensation on the tongue and a minimal salty finish.
In terms of energy, Selva Mate is a very good choice: it provides a solid boost and is exceptionally long-lasting. The result is an excellent Argentinian yerba that is undoubtedly one of the highlights of our June delivery. If you are a fan of the Argentinian style at its best, reach for la Selva Tradicional.
PS. It has nothing to do with the Brazilian brand la Selva. The word selva means jungle in Spanish.
