Yerba Mate Salto Bielakowicz Barbacua 500 g
A newcomer to the Polish yerba mate market, which I had the chance to test in May 2021, coming from Los Helechos in the province of Misiones, Argentina. The packaging itself doesn't look particularly special; personally, it reminds me of a bag of flour :). But as always, what's inside matters most, so let's focus on that. Right from opening the pack there is quite a surprise, as the structure of the leaves resembles a combination of the Paraguayan and Uruguayan styles. This means the pack contains finely ground leaves mixed with coarsely cut stems and a good amount of dust. It's no coincidence that the packaging bears the words Tipo Barbacua.
Salto Bielakowicz is a version dried using the traditional Barbacua method, which gives the leaves a smoky aroma and flavour with noticeable smoked notes. In terms of appearance and taste it is definitely closer to Paraguayan varieties, as the infusion has plenty of bitterness, smokiness and astringency, balanced by nutty notes and smoked plum. It also delivers a high energy kick and an above-average yield, partly thanks to the fine cut.
This is definitely a choice for those who don't mind a fine cut. People looking for intense experiences and unusual Argentine yerbas with a rich flavour will be delighted. That said, it's a bit of an all-or-nothing yerba: either you'll love it for a long time, or your acquaintance may end rather quickly.
