Opis produktu
Yerba Mate Indio Elaborada Barbacua 1000 g
A brand-new product dried using the traditional Barbacua method, whose effects can be felt in the flavour and aroma of this extraordinary yerba mate. On opening the pack you'd rather think it was a Paraguayan mate, and yet what a surprise. A few words are in order about this relatively young company and the way it works and produces.
Yerba Mate Indio is a small family company that started operating in 2012. It is headed by Hugo Friedemberg and has joined an association with 13 Barbacuá dryers in Oberá, in central Misiones.
Having the necessary infrastructure, he and his family decided to reach consumers with their own product, focusing on its quality and on care throughout the entire yerba mate production chain, from the plantation (harvesting - pruning - drying - ageing - milling) to packing and sealing.
The Indio company receives ongoing support from INTA - OBERÁ (National Institute of Agricultural Technology) with training on soils, pruning, improving dryers and fertilisation, as well as continuous advice.
The brand uses the Barbacuá system, a technique used by the Guarani for more than 400 years. It is a slow, dedicated dehydration process in which the leaves are exposed to the heat of a wood fire for 10 to 12 hours, taking on essences from a selected group of trees.
The yerba is aged for 24 months, because between the 18th and 24th month it acquires characteristics that would be impossible to achieve with shorter ageing.
Interestingly, for the harvest and subsequent drying, from May to August, they employ about 12 workers. Part of the raw material is bought from other small producers in the area.
Yerba Mate INDIO also means environmental awareness: its packaging is made of recyclable paper and printed with water-based, biodegradable inks rather than chlorinated ones. It is produced in an environmentally friendly way and contains no pesticides or artificial flavourings. It is a typical example of an artisanal mate produced organically without certification, which, due to the high costs, is not being pursued for now.
What can we say about the Indio Barbacua mate itself? After opening, we see leaves ground fairly finely for an Argentine mate, medium-cut stems and quite a lot of dust. As for the aromas before brewing - there is a scent of smoking, smoky notes, a hay-like quality and a slight sharpness.
After pouring it into the matero (mate gourd) and preparing the mound, it's time to taste. The first infusion and straight away a symphony of flavours: the bitterness is relatively strong, and you will also detect smoked plum, roasted almond and walnuts. Very interesting and refined flavour notes that work very well together.
In terms of stimulation it is solid; the mate will provide a good dose of energy for physical or mental work. We recommend Yerba Mate Indio Barbacua rather to those already more familiar with the world of yerba mate and to those who don't mind a fairly high degree of grinding. Be sure to try it.
