Yerba Mate Il Capitano Tradicional 250 g
A new yerba from the town of Oberá in the Misiones province of Argentina, created through a collaboration between the Mate Rojo brand (Molinos La Misión SA) and one of the legends of Argentinian football, Javier Zanetti, who is nicknamed "Pupi" in Argentina - a nickname also featured on the pack. The portfolio of Molinos La Misión SA includes brands such as Mate Rojo, "10", Rodeo, Chamame and Kurupi.
The Il Capitano pack comes in a distinctive navy-and-black colour scheme, matching the colours of the club Zanetti was and still is associated with - Inter Milan, of which he is undoubtedly a legend. The pack also features a "Pampa" motif, the former footballer's signature and the Argentinian flag split in two by a gourd with a bombilla. The resealable doypack contains fairly coarsely cut yerba dominated by leaves, with medium-sized stems and hardly any dust. The yerba is naturally aged for 24 months, during which it can develop additional flavour qualities.
The aroma of the dry yerba is strongly hay-like, cereal-nutty, woody and creamy, and is also slightly reminiscent of a campfire. It is neither overly strong nor deep, which will surely appeal to fans of not-too-strong Argentinian yerbas.
The first sips of the infusion are very light and mild, with pleasant bitterness and astringency, a drying sensation on the tongue and noticeable woody, hay-like and cereal-nutty accents. Over time the bitterness and background notes grow stronger, but they remain well balanced, so the yerba is very pleasant to drink for many hours until it loses its flavour.
Il Capitano is a very successful Argentinian yerba from Mate Rojo, available in a relatively small (250 g) pack, which will surely make it easier to give it a try. It guarantees many hours of mate drinking with a good yerba that will appeal to all fans of typical Argentinian flavours without smoky or heavier accents.
