Yerba Mate Esmeralda Super Extra Tipo PU-1 1000 g
An excellent Uruguayan-style offering from the Baldo brand, which can safely be called a Premium version. Why? Above all, the pack contains only finely cut, selected leaves with a moderate amount of dust. Inside the beautifully designed packaging you won't find any stems, which Uruguayans consider unnecessary "filler". This has its pros and cons: stems indeed add no flavour to the infusion, but they do make filtering easier. If drinking with a mound of leaves doesn't scare you, you'll be delighted.
Esmeralda contains light green leaves full of rich flavours and aromas. The scent is hay-like, cereal (wheaty), fresh and slightly grassy. The taste is never dull: an intense, bold infusion in which astringency and bitterness play first fiddle. There are also strong tea accents, a sweetness reminiscent of cereal biscuits, wheaty and malty notes, freshness and a delicate umami (salty) taste.
It is one of those varieties that hold their flavour for a very long time: with a standard serving of up to 50 g you can easily use more than 1 litre of water. It also delivers a good dose of energy, so it's definitely a choice for a demanding day when you need that boost to run at full speed.
In my opinion, alongside Rei Verde Export Premium and Baldo, the best Uruguayan yerba mate. Definitely worth trying.
