Many yerba mate fans know el Moncayo, mainly thanks to its strongly herbal version, which is among the very best yerbas available in its category. Here we have a new product that contains only Paraguayan holly, with no herbal additives at all.
El Moncayo Tradicional is produced in Brazil but is intended mainly for the Uruguayan market. When you open the pack, you see fairly finely cut leaves with a minimal amount of stems and a moderate amount of dust - a cut typical of Uruguayan-style yerba.
Because the leaves are so finely ground, this type of mate needs to be prepared using the so-called mound method. Otherwise drinking el Moncayo will be quite difficult and the fine particles may clog the bombilla.
The aroma of the leaves is intense, with tea-like, hay-like, nettle-like, grassy and algae notes. A very rich bouquet with its own distinctive style, reminiscent of the herbal version, even though it contains no herbs ;)
At first the flavour of the infusion is relatively restrained and light, with grassy, nettle-like, tea-like, algae and malty notes that closely match the aroma of the leaves. The bitterness is mild and the tartness moderate, but this changes over time. The infusion gains strength and intensity, grainy and nutty accents appear, and the bitterness and tartness increase. In the foreground there are nettle-like, tea-like and malty accents, topped off with a salty aftertaste reminiscent of umami.
It guarantees many hours of drinking, delivering an above-average energy boost while maintaining a very high level of intensity.
El Moncayo Tradicional is undoubtedly among the very best of the Uruguayan style and a must-try for every yerba mate fan, especially if you have already enjoyed the brand's herbal bestseller.
