Yerba mate Don Leandro Tradicional 500 g
One of three offerings from Don Leandro S.R.L., a company based in the province of Misiones in Argentina, whose range also includes El Hachero yerba mate and its newest brand, Camino Nuevo.
The Don Leandro packaging shows a man sipping yerba mate on the edge of a yerba plantation, surrounded by the characteristic red soil and, above all, Paraguayan holly. The design is undeniably stylish and it almost feels a shame to open the pack... but, as we all know, what matters most is what is inside!
According to the producer, this is a BCP product, meaning Bajo Contenido de Polvo, i.e. with reduced dust content, which will please all fans of coarser-cut blends with little or hardly any dust.
When you open the pack, you are greeted by a fairly strong hay-like aroma, slightly woody, grainy and nutty, with a subtle smoky touch. It is somewhat reminiscent of a campfire, and a light grassiness can also be detected.
The leaves are nicely cut and look good: they are coarsely cut, with some added stems and a small amount of dust.
Now for the tasting: the infusion has an interestingly structured flavour. It offers an unobtrusive bitterness and astringency at an almost ideal level, while grainy and nutty notes create an interesting background. There is also a subtle smoky touch, a light sweetness and saltiness, all of which blend together fantastically to give an exceptionally tasty product.
Don Leandro guarantees good yield and many hours of high-quality mate drinking in the company of an exceptionally tasty, classic Argentinian yerba that fits perfectly into the flavour profile of the Misiones province. It is also solid in terms of energy: the infusion will give you a good boost and help you find the energy you are missing.
