Yerba Mate Canarias Serena 250 g
The herbal version of the cult Uruguayan mate, recently available in a smaller pack (250 g). Produced in Brazil but intended for the Uruguayan market. This herbal variety contains the finest finely ground leaves, a minimal amount of stems (approx. 1%), quite a lot of dust and four added herbs: linden, mint, lemon balm and mburucuya (passionflower).
Because the leaves are ground so finely, this type of mate needs to be prepared using the so-called mound method. Otherwise drinking Canarias will be practically impossible and the bombilla may keep clogging with fine particles.
The flavour of Canarias Serena combines the best features of Brazilian and Argentinian mate with a noticeable herbal aroma and taste. It can be described as milder than the classic version (Elaborada). Creaminess, sweetness and a vegetal taste play the lead, with noticeable bitterness and moderate acidity. It is rounded off by a delicate herbal note from the bouquet of added herbs, which stay in the background and do not dominate the mate.
An interesting change from classic Uruguayan Tipo PU-1 mate. Recommended rather for more experienced drinkers because of how finely it is ground and how much dust it contains. Still, it is worth trying at any stage of your yerba mate journey, as long as you use the right method (the so-called mound).
