A newcomer straight from the town of Apostoles in the province of Misiones, Argentina. Interestingly, the company states that its products are naturally aged, dried using traditional methods, and that sorting and packing are done by hand. The brand also values strict control of the raw material and focuses on cultivation without pesticides or artificial fertilisers. The result is a very good end product at an affordable price.
The Relumbron brand belongs to Rodrigo Daniel Escobar, who fairly recently started producing this yerba, available in two versions: herbal (Hierbas Serranas) and classic (Tradicional). One thing we're sure of: if they maintain their current level, their products will conquer the European market quite quickly.
Relumbron Hierbas Serranas is a very good Argentine yerba mate in which the herbs have a lot to say, while still leaving room for the Paraguayan holly itself to shine. When you open the pack, the aroma is intense, slightly sharp, strongly minty, gently smoky and tea-like. An extremely inviting and pleasant composition, so let's move on to tasting.
The pack contains medium and finely cut grey-green leaves mixed with large pieces of stems and a moderate amount of dust. Add to that the herbal additions: poleo and mint. The blend also looks very interesting in the matero (mate gourd).
The infusion tastes pleasantly minty with a noticeable astringency and bitterness. There is no shortage of tea notes (leaning towards green tea), herbal (nettle-like) notes, a light sweetness and a drying aftertaste on the tongue.
The blend has a very high yield compared with other Argentine counterparts, which do not always hold their flavour and aroma this long. Here you'll enjoy a tasty, strongly minty yerba for a long time, with quite a solid energy kick from the infusion.
Relumbron works equally well cold as a refreshing terere. It's a good choice for lovers of herbal mate and for those starting their adventure with yerba mate who are looking for a version with a relatively mild bitterness. They will definitely be pleased with this blend.
