An unusual option from Brazil, made of aged dried leaf in the form of finely ground leaves and stems. It is without doubt an interesting choice, especially as it is hard to place in any of the yerba mate categories we have known so far. It is neither a typical chimarrao nor a typical Brazilian yerba. In terms of cut, it is closest to Elizabeth, Estancia or Gaucho Tradicional.
Yacuy Moida Grossa "Kelly" differs from the chimarrao we know in that it is aged, which undoubtedly gives it character and affects the colour of the leaves as well as the taste and aroma. When you open the pack, you are greeted by a pleasant herbal aroma reminiscent of nettle, hay, tea and grass. The finely ground leaves in the pack are green with a visible grey tint. They are not ground as finely as typical chimarrao, so with traditional preparation, i.e. with the so-called mound, you will have no trouble preparing it and enjoying the infusion.
Yacuy Kelly yerba mate clearly reflects these aromas once brewed, as they carry over strongly into the taste of the infusion itself. Besides moderately intense bitterness and medium astringency, the infusion reveals nettle, grassy, tea and hay notes. There are no heavy or deep, low-pitched flavours.
In terms of energy it is solid, but without excessive stimulation. Thanks to the cut, it is very economical and stays full-bodied for many hours, making it a good option for trying something completely different on the yerba market.
Yacuy "Kelly" is undoubtedly a one-of-a-kind option that intrigued us practically from the moment we opened it thanks to its aroma, and it did not disappoint with its taste - in fact, it surprised and charmed us with its character. Be sure to try it!
