Another classic option straight from Brazil, this time a very leafy version without additives, with a highly intense infusion and considerable bitterness.
We set off on a little trip to Brazil with the Terra Mate brand and its Pura Folha version, i.e. leaves only, of medium size. There is practically no dust or stems in the blend. The yerba has an intense green colour and is evenly cut. The size of the leaves means you will have no trouble filtering it. A simple mound will ensure hours of mate drinking.
When you open the pack, strong grassy, grain and nutty notes hit your nose. All thanks to the airtight Doypack packaging, which will also come in handy as you use up the contents. The zip closure helps preserve the intense aroma and flavour for longer.
The flavour of the infusion is fairly deep, with strongly noticeable bitterness and astringency, plus grain, nutty and grassy notes. Creaminess and saltiness are only barely detectable. This is definitely an option for those looking for a more substantial flavour. Those who prefer milder flavours may be a little surprised.
The yerba is very long-lasting and delivers a solid energy boost. If you like classic styles and are not afraid of bitterness and astringency, it is definitely worth reaching for. Prepared as terere, it will be noticeably lighter and milder than the hot version.
