Another new arrival from Argentina, and once again a brand that is completely new to our range and one we had not had the chance to try before. Its good reputation on the Argentine market caught our attention and we simply could not pass it by.
On the deep green packaging with a nice, simple design we see a crowned lion "guarding" the contents of the pack. And the yerba itself is no ordinary offering, as it is dried using the traditional Barbacua method, which gives it a slightly smoky aroma and depth of flavour. The leaves are aged for about 14 months, during which time they develop character and extra nuances.
Leon Barbacua impresses with the look of the leaves themselves: they are nicely cut, with coarsely ground leaves, some medium-sized stems and a moderate amount of dust. The way it is ground and cut means anyone can prepare it with ease, regardless of their previous experience with yerba.
The dry leaves smell strongly woody, grainy and nutty, hay-like, slightly smoky, gently grassy, with a hint of roasted sunflower seeds. A very interesting combination of aromas that certainly makes you want to prepare a gourd and taste the infusion right away.
The first sips deliver a solid flavour experience straight away: a wealth of interesting notes and nuances, plenty of bitterness and tartness, and an astringent aftertaste on the tongue. On top of that come strong grainy, nutty and woody accents, along with notes of algae, bread crust and roasted sunflower seeds. The flavour of the infusion can be described as complex and bold, and it does not lose intensity with subsequent refills.
Leon Barbacua offers very good yield over many hours of drinking and a solid energy boost. Its flavour profile is somewhat reminiscent of Isondu Barbacua and Titrayju Barbacua. Well worth trying for every fan of the Argentine style, and especially for fans of Barbacua-type yerba.
