Yerba mate Kaiwa Tradicional 500 g
A new brand with an unusual name, which refers to a dialect of the Guarani language family spoken by around 15,000 people living in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul and around 500 people in the province of Misiones in Argentina. It is produced in San Ignacio, Misiones, by la Hoja.
Kaiwa yerba mate is a classic option without additions or flavourings, made of fairly coarsely cut leaves aged for 18 months in an entirely natural way, with an admixture of stems and a small amount of dust. During natural ageing the leaves gain character and additional flavour qualities. The producer describes its flavour as mild, tasty and long-lasting.
A few words are also due about the packaging itself, whose beautiful design, in my personal opinion, makes it one of the nicest yerba packs I have seen in person.
The aroma of the leaves after opening is intense, hay-like, woody and grainy-nutty. It is undoubtedly far from bland and firmly in the bold category - the noticeable aromas immediately herald what to expect from the infusion.
At first the flavour of the infusion charms with its lightness and mildness; it is delicately grainy and hay-like with a hint of roasted sunflower seeds or bread crust. You will surely also find a light creaminess and a touch, almost a whisper, of smoke. Over time the intensity of the infusion steadily increases, bitterness and astringency come to the fore, there is also a light acidity, and the woody and grainy notes intensify as well, delivering very pleasant flavour sensations.
Kaiwa Tradicional is undoubtedly a yerba for fans of the Argentine style, but without excessive intensity. We rate it very highly, especially for its traditional cultivation and processing, and ultimately for its beautiful aroma and interesting background notes.
In terms of energy, it delivers a solid boost, and the leaves offer a high yield - be sure to try it!
