Yerba Mate "10" Reserva Tradicional 500 g
An interesting mate from the town of Obera in the province of Misiones, Argentina. It is produced by the cooperative of the Mate Pampa and Mate Rojo brands (Molinos La Misión SA), a company founded by the son of Ukrainian immigrants, Don Juan Eladio Stepaniuk. Their portfolio includes brands such as Mate Rojo, Rodeo, Chamame and Kurupi.
The bright pink pack with the number "10" is strongly associated with Leo Messi, one of the greatest footballers of all time and a big fan of Paraguayan holly. Inside you will find fairly coarsely cut leaves with medium-sized stems, and very little dust.
The aroma of the dry leaves can be described as strongly grainy and nutty, woody, slightly grassy, hay-like, gently fruity and herbal. The aroma is definitely light and pleasant, with no smoky accents.
From the first pour it is fairly intense, but the bitterness and astringency are in no way overwhelming. Typical Argentinian flavours and background notes blend well together, resulting in a very good Argentinian yerba. The grainy, nutty and woody taste dominates, complemented by an astringent aftertaste on the tongue and light grassy and hay-like notes.
"10" Reserva gives a solid boost - it is not exceptionally strong, but it provides enough energy for many hours of mate drinking and keeps its intensity for quite a long time. Mate Rojo has certainly done a good job and given us a tasty Argentinian yerba.
