A Brazilian yerba mate (or, strictly speaking, erva mate) that is perfect for drinking cold (terere) on hot summer days. Just pour ice-cold water over it and add a few ice cubes. It is equally good prepared hot, especially for those taking their first steps with Paraguayan holly who are wary of too much bitterness and intensity of flavour.
That said, nothing stops you from preparing it the classic way, with warm water. It will no doubt win plenty of fans thanks to the beautiful colour of the leaves and the generally nice cut of the dried leaf.
In the tightly sealed pack of Laranjeiras Terere Pura Folha you will find mainly fairly coarsely cut leaves with a small admixture of stems. The amount of dust is practically minimal, which will delight fans of this type of yerba.
The vivid green leaves have an intense scent - straight from the pack you can smell grassy, herbaceous, grainy and nettle-like aromas, and even something reminiscent of seaweed. The scent is quite distinct and pronounced, and it certainly tempts you to fill your gourd and try it right away.
The infusion is not very bitter or astringent - both are at a moderate level, which lets you focus on other interesting notes in the background. These largely mirror the aromas you can smell. The infusion is strongly grassy, fresh, nettle-like, slightly tea-like and nettle-like.
When preparing it hot, you can raise the intensity by using water at around 75-80 degrees Celsius. With cooler water the intensity of the infusion drops slightly, so you can adjust it to your own taste. The dried leaf is also an interesting base for yerba experiments. You can pour fruit juice over it or enrich it with other interesting herbal or fruit additions, e.g. fresh or dried fruit.
The infusion delivers a solid dose of energy and is very long-lasting, so you get a tasty infusion you can enjoy for several hours.
